Questions

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your file and your password never reach our servers. Many other sites upload both.

How strong is the protection?

We use AES-256, the strongest encryption PDFs support. A long password (12+ characters, or a generated one) can't be guessed in any practical time.

What if I forget the password?

Nobody can recover it, including us. Keep it somewhere safe, such as a password manager.

Can I stop people printing or copying?

Yes. Open More options and block printing, copying, editing or other actions. PDF readers follow these settings, but they can't stop every tool, so use a password to open for private files.

What is the permissions password?

It lets you change the print and copy settings later. We make one for you and show it after protecting; you can also choose your own.

Can I change the password of a PDF that is already locked?

Yes. Add it, type its current password, then choose the new one.

Will it open on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows?

Yes, in every modern PDF reader. Turn on "Works with older PDF readers" only for software from before 2008.

Why can't I use letters like é or अ in the password?

iPhone, iPad and Mac can't open PDFs whose password has them, so we only allow English letters, numbers and keyboard symbols.

Does it change my PDF?

No. Text, images, links, bookmarks and forms stay exactly as they were; only the lock is added. Digitally signed PDFs will show their signature as changed.

Are there limits?

Up to 20 PDFs at a time, 200 MB and 2,000 pages each. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
