Questions

Is my text uploaded or saved on your servers?

No. Counting happens in your browser, so your text never reaches our servers. If "Keep my text on this device" is on, it is saved only in this browser so it's still here after a reload.

How are words counted?

A word is a run of letters or numbers; "don't" and "well-known" count as one word. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which don't put spaces between words, are split into words with your browser's own dictionary.

Do characters include spaces?

We show both: characters with spaces and without. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one character, as you see it.

How is reading time worked out?

At 238 words per minute, an average adult reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute; you can change it under Details.

Can I check limits for X, Instagram or a meta description?

Yes. The Limits tab shows live bars for X posts, Instagram captions, SMS, meta titles and descriptions, LinkedIn posts and YouTube titles.

Can I set my own word limit, like 650 words for the Common App?

Yes. Pick a preset or type your own, for words or characters, as a minimum or a maximum.

What is keyword density?

How often each word or phrase appears, as a share of all words. Common words like "the" are left out unless you include them. Tap a keyword to find it in your text.

How is readability scored?

With the Flesch reading ease and grade level formulas, for English text. They're estimates, useful for comparing drafts.

Can I count the words in a Word or PDF file?

Yes. Open or drop a .docx, .odt, .rtf, .pdf, .txt or .md file; it's read in your browser. Scanned PDFs have no text to count.
