How it's worked out

Length
Every unit is an exact number of metres. The inch is 2.54 cm exactly (since 1959), the foot 12 inches, the mile 5,280 feet.
Weight and mass
The pound is 0.45359237 kg exactly; the ounce 1/16 lb; the stone 14 lb; the tola 180 grains.
Volume
The US gallon is 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L); the UK gallon 4.54609 L. Cups, pints and fluid ounces follow from them.
Temperature
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15. A change in °C is 9/5 of that change in °F.
Area
An acre is 43,560 square feet; a gaj is a square yard; a cent is 1/100 acre; a guntha 1/40 acre.
Data
kB, MB, GB and TB step by 1,000; KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB by 1,024 (IEC 80000-13).
Cooking
Grams per cup from USDA FoodData Central; real cups vary with how they're filled.
Exact or rounded
Sums use exact fractions. A result is Exact only when the shown number is the whole answer; otherwise it's Rounded, half away from zero.

Questions

How do I convert millilitres to cups?

Divide millilitres by 236.5882365 for US cups, or by 250 for metric cups.

How do I convert cm to inches?

Divide by 2.54. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 30 cm is 30 ÷ 2.54 = 11.81 inches.

How do I convert kg to pounds?

Divide by 0.45359237, or multiply by about 2.2046. A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 70 kg is 154.32 lb.

What's the formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit?

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32. 20 °C is 68 °F. The other way: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Why are US and UK gallons different?

They come from different old measures. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres. Pints and fluid ounces differ too, so pick the one your recipe or label uses.

How many grams are in a cup?

It depends on what's in the cup. A US cup of all-purpose flour is about 125 g, sugar about 200 g and butter about 227 g (USDA). Pick the ingredient in Cooking. Real cups vary with how they're filled.

What do Exact and Rounded mean?

Exact means the shown number is the full answer. Rounded means the answer goes on longer and was cut to the precision you chose. Change the precision in Settings.

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?

Drives are sold in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Many computers count in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but label them GB. Both are the same amount of space.

What's the difference between oz and fl oz?

An ounce (oz) is a weight; a fluid ounce (fl oz) is a volume. They match only for water-like liquids, roughly.

Why can't I convert bigha, katha or marla?

Their size differs from state to state, sometimes by district. Check your local land records for the value used where the land is. Gaj, cent, guntha, acre and hectare have one fixed size and are included.

Can I use these numbers for trade or medicine?

For trade, medicine or safety-critical use, use certified measuring tools and official values. For medicine, use the measure that came with it: a kitchen teaspoon isn't a dosing spoon.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. Every conversion happens in your browser. A shared link keeps the values after a #, a part of the link that browsers don't send to servers.
